About Us

The BEST Agency for Accreditation

Since its establishment in 2008, JANAAC has been carrying out its mandate of facilitating trade between Jamaica and its trading partners by enabling Jamaica’s Conformity Assessment System to meet international standards and the World Trade Organization’s (WTO’s) Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade.

OUR HISTORY

The Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC), now trading as JANAAC Global Accreditation, is an agency of the Government of Jamaica established as a result of a Cabinet Decision in September 2006. It was incorporated in March 2007 as a Company Limited by Guarantee under the Companies Act of Jamaica.

New ground rules of trade, established through various World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements, promote free movement of goods and require that safety and quality of products be proven through transparent and reliable conformity assessment systems, thus eliminating technical barriers to trade. These new global rules require that governments implement conformity assessment systems that will ensure that the various agreements are met.

Consequently, JANAAC was established to facilitate trade between Jamaica and its trading partners by enabling Jamaica’s conformity assessment system to meet international standards and the WTO’s agreements.

The establishment of JANAAC is the first step. It is envisaged that by conforming to the new international principles for conformity assessment procedures established globally, eventually test results and conformity assessment certificates generated by Jamaica’s accredited conformity assessment bodies will be accepted by our trading partners. This will effectively eliminate the need for Jamaican goods to be detained in the ports of third country markets and retested.

JANAAC began offering accreditation services to medical laboratories in September 2008 when they were invited to apply for accreditation. In January 2009, JANAAC conducted its first training workshop for assessors of medical laboratories. This was followed by an invitation to testing and calibration laboratories in February 2009.

As we continue to grow and expand our services, we are proud to unveil our new brand: JANAAC Global Accreditation. This rebranding reflects our commitment to promoting global trade, increasing consumer and market confidence, and transforming quality infrastructures. Our new mission: “To promote global trade, increase consumer and market confidence through internationally accepted accreditation and training of laboratories, inspection and certification bodies” and vision: “A premier internationally recognised accreditation body that transforms quality infrastructures, facilitates global trade and improves quality of life” embody our dedication to these goals, emphasising our role in facilitating global trade and improving the quality of life for all.

Our new name, JANAAC Global Accreditation, represents our vision of becoming a premier internationally recognised accreditation body, while our new logo symbolises our national pride, global thrust, alliances and vibrancy in trade. These elements have undergone a rigorous approval process to ensure alignment with our strategic objectives and values.

Over the past 16 years, JANAAC has played a pivotal role in advancing quality and standards across various industries. Our commitment to excellence has contributed to the growth and reputation of the laboratories, inspection and certification bodies we serve. JANAAC is proud to partner with an elite group of accredited CABs that provide critical services to various sectors such as, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Food, Construction, Environment, National Security, Mining, and Energy sectors.

JANAAC has worked tirelessly to deliver industry-leading services to conformity assessment bodies (CABs), including laboratories, inspection bodies, and certification bodies. To date, our footprints are evident in the eleven (11) countries we serve in the region.

JANAAC’s achievements on the international stage testify to its commitment to excellence in accreditation services. Being the only internationally recognised accreditation body in the English-speaking Caribbean, JANAAC holds full membership in the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the Inter-American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC) Executive Committees. In April 2023, JANAAC made history as the first Caribbean economy to join the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). Through its ILAC signatory status and participation in mutual recognition arrangements (MRAs), JANAAC supports the global acceptance of certificates and reports issued by accredited conformity assessment bodies (CABs). This significantly reduces costs and technical barriers to trade for exporters, facilitating smoother trade and market access in target markets.

With JANAAC being a signatory to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) for four standards (ISO/IEC 17025 for testing laboratories and Calibration Laboratories, ISO 15189 for medical testing and ISO/IEC 17020 for inspection bodies, the test and inspection reports of JANAAC accredited CABs  are accepted worldwide. Accreditation to international standards benchmarked against best practices by JANAAC helps to enable the removal of duplicative testing, certification, and inspection and establish confidence in the marketplace.

JANAAC has applied to be recognised for a fifth MLA scope allowing for the international recognition of the results of Certification Bodies that are accredited by JANAAC to the ISO/IEC 17021 standard.

In June 2022, JANAAC became one of four (4) accreditation bodies to be recognised by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the FDA Accredited Third-Party Certification Program (FDA-TPP) for a period of five years. JANAAC is approved for 10 of the 11 possible scopes in this program adding another layer to the Agency’s accreditation programmes to strengthen the trade facilitation infrastructure for Caribbean exports. JANAAC’s accreditation of certification bodies will result in greater acceptance of certifications issued to commercial farms, manufacturers, exporters, food processors for human and animal food exported to the U.S aimed at preventing or minimising the risk of contaminated food entering the United States.

Effective February 26, 2024, JANAAC became the eighth accreditation body approved by the US FDA for the Laboratory Accreditation for Analyses of Foods (LAAF) Program.

JANAAC has full membership and active representation at the executive level for the regional and international accreditation organisations. These include the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), the Inter-American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

The JANAAC Training Institute will be the first choice for consultants, CAB personnel, regulators, manufacturers and exporters to boost their knowledge and competence to understand the requirements of international standards and principles of accreditation to achieve and maintain accreditation and improve operational performance and productivity. We will continue to integrate new technologies and best practices in our training and accreditation programmes, staying abreast of changes to industry standards and regulations and ensuring that our services remain relevant to effectively meet the needs of evolving industries.
